Besides the technical introduction described in the last post, I also read on the art side of modeling, and how to give the objects you create the look you desire. One article in particular listed a lot of relevant principles and their respective guidelines:

  • Realism – base your models on real images
  • Detail and Functionality – add details that suggest the utility of an object so it doesn’t feel out of place.
  • Scale and Proportion – The relative size between the models and the parts within the model can be use to express character
  • Appeal and Exaggeration – Design for emotional impact, using shapes and size to emphasize the characteristics you want to transmit
